Employee Spotlight – Erik Doepke

How did you get started in this field?

I have always been a “computer geek,” getting my first Atari 800 computer back in 1979. I started doing 3D graphics and animation in 1986. I attended the University of Maryland, College Park as a Computer Science major, but eventually changed to Radio/Television/Film Production. I held a part-time position on the weekends at NBC-17 in Raleigh, NC while working full time at Kruger, traveling all over the country. I have been with MR Systems for over 15 years now and looking forward to the next 15 (as long as Jim Bercik doesn’t invoke the “lemon law” for all of the body parts I have had replaced/repaired!). Most importantly, I have an incredibly supportive wife, Teresa, and three amazing children – Justin (12), Kyle (10), and Alexa (3).

How did you learn about MR Systems?

I worked with Jim Bercik at my previous company, Kruger, for 7 years before he left there and came to MR Systems. MR Systems was looking to get into the 3D SCADA market and they were kind enough to allow me sufficient time to wrap things up in Raleigh to relocate. I followed him about 6 months later and have never looked back.

How has MR Systems changed since you started working here?

MR has grown significantly since I started here back in 2001. We have nearly tripled in size since then, and have managed to continually hire the best people in their respective professions. The “Regionalization” of customers has made keeping up with regular customers much easier as opposed to the old days when everyone worked with nearly every customer.

How has MR Systems helped your career development?

Working at MR Systems has provided me with numerous opportunities to further enhance my professional skills as an Applications Engineer and 3D Graphics Artist. The company has always provided the necessary tools and training to make me more proficient in my job.

What is your proudest moment at MR Systems?

My proudest moment(s) at MR Systems has to be helping the company win the Wonderware Open competition two years in a row. The fact that such a small company can produce a product that out performs Fortune 500 companies is quite impressive.

What are the most interesting and challenging projects you have worked on at MR Systems?

The most interesting project(s) has to be all of the work that I have done for Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA). I have been working on their system for over 15 years now and have watched it grow into one of our largest systems. Between the four plants I have done, their system has well over 20,000 tags between all of the Wonderware applications. My most challenging project has been Artesia, NM. The simple logistics of maintaining a customer on the other side of the country is difficult at times, but we have established a good relationship with them and they continue to utilize us as opposed to anyone closer to them.

What advice do you have for future employees?

Take pride in your work and never settle. Our industry is constantly evolving so keeping on top of things is critical. Always strive to do something better than you have done in the past. A willingness to go the extra mile and put in the extra time and effort is essential to keeping MR Systems ahead of all of our competition.
